T4mpat Self Storage - Packing Tips

Packing Tips

Proper packing is the key to keeping your belongings safe and dry, especially in Bali’s humid climate. Based on our experience and hundreds of real customer results, here’s what works best:

General Preparation

  • Ensure all goods are completely clean and dry before packing to prevent mold.
  • We run dehumidifiers during periods of high humidity or rainfall.
  • Dismantle knock-down furniture where possible and store screws/bolts in labeled bags.
  • Place smaller items inside drawers, furniture, or larger appliances to save space.
  • Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap and seal them securely.

Furniture & Fabric Protection

  • Wrap furniture to protect from dust. Long-term customers storing up to 7 years achieved excellent results using single-face corrugated cardboard.
  • Before storing sofas, mattresses, cushions, and pillows, leave them in direct sunlight for at least 1 hour per side to evaporate residual moisture.
  • We strongly recommend wrapping upholstered furniture, linens, and cushions using plastic sheeting from "Toko Plastik" or using vacuum-sealed bags available at Ace Hardware, AZ-KO, Shopee, or Tokopedia.
  • Do not use thin cloth shopping bags; instead, use durable IKEA-style bags with zip closures for better protection.

Humidity & Mold Control

Bali’s tropical climate means moisture management is essential. We run dehumidifiers during periods of high humidity and rainfall to help keep airborne moisture down inside the facility. Please also follow these preparation steps before storing items:

Pre-dry furniture & fabrics

  • Ensure everything is completely dry before packing to prevent mold.
  • For sofas, mattresses, cushions, pillows, and upholstered items, place in direct sunlight for at least 1 hour per side to evaporate residual moisture.
  • After drying, wrap and seal with plastic sheeting (from Toko Plastik or supermarkets), or use vacuum bags (Ace Hardware, AZ-KO, Shopee, Tokopedia).

Laundry caution (perfume moisture)

  • We’ve seen cases where laundry adds fabric perfume after drying. Clothes then sealed in plastic can trap moisture and grow mold later.
  • Always air-dry clothes and linens again at home until fully dry before packing.
  • Seal fabrics in plastic or vacuum bags only when you’re sure there’s zero residual moisture.

Clothes, Fabrics & Packaging

Specific guidance that works well in Bali conditions:

Wrap & seal properly

  • Wrap and seal clothes, linens, upholstered furniture, cushions, pillows, sofas, and mattresses using plastic sheeting or vacuum bags.
  • Use sturdy IKEA-style zip bags (cloth totes alone provide little protection).
  • For long-term storage, consider single-face corrugated cardboard around furniture — we’ve seen excellent results in items stored up to 7 years.

Boxes & sealing

  • Cardboard boxes are fine. After packing, seal all seams with tape.
  • For long-term storage, over-wrap boxes with plastic sheeting and tape all edges.
  • Each time you open a box inside the unit, reseal it fully before leaving.
  • Place small items inside furniture/appliances to conserve space (once inside the unit).

Extra protection

  • Use naphthalene balls to protect fabrics.
  • Treat wooden furniture with anti-termite products such as Latrek 400EC or Agenda 25EC before storing.
  • For lawn/garden equipment, drain all fluids to avoid corrosion.
  • For refrigerators: defrost fully, dry thoroughly, then leave the door open to air-dry for a few days before storage; use protective covers.

Labeling & Placement

Organize your unit for safety and easy access:

Clear labeling

  • Label boxes on all sides (e.g., “Fragile”, “This side up”).
  • For business inventory/files, label clearly and create simple aisles for access.

Smart placement

  • Place heavier items at the bottom; fragile items on top.
  • Stack boxes firmly so they won’t tip.
  • Put frequently accessed items near the front.
  • If needed, leave a small walkway/aisle down the center for easy access.

Prohibited Items

For safety, legal compliance, and to protect all customers’ belongings, the following are not permitted in storage units:

Drugs & Illegal Items

Drugs, narcotics, or any illegal items (including stolen goods) are strictly prohibited in Indonesia. Any suspicion of such activity will be reported to the police.

Weapons, Ammunition & Explosives

Firearms, weapons, ammunition, bombs, fireworks, flamethrowers, explosives, hand grenades, land mines, mortar shells, bazookas — all are prohibited. (Firearms are illegal without a license in Indonesia.)

Toxic Materials & Hazardous Chemicals

Do not store chemicals or cleaners where fumes can mix or cause corrosion. This includes: chlorine, bleach, ammonia, solvents, turpentine, paint thinner, kerosene and anything poisonous or contagious.

Combustible / Flammable Materials

Prohibited: petrol/gasoline, diesel, LPG gas bottles (unless empty), lighter fluid, menthol, medical alcohol, and similar fuels/solvents/cleaners/paints.

Items with Strong Fumes or Odors

Items with strong fumes/odors are not allowed. Scented candles, soaps, play dough must only be stored in airtight or sealed glass containers (otherwise, do not store).

Perishables & Food

No food or drink items — even if “sealed.” Dry pet food in bags is also not allowed. These attract pests and can cause odor or mold issues.
Do not store canned foods, jars, or bottled drinks — heat can cause fermentation and rupture.

Living Creatures, People & Plants

No live animals, no living plants. Storage units cannot be used for habitation or sleeping.

Wet Items

Everything placed into storage must be 100% dry. Wet or damp items can cause mold/mildew and irreversible damage.
It’s fine to store water-used items (rafts, kayaks, canoes, surfboards, scuba gear — not tanks) as long as they’re fully dried first.
